Top Tips to Support Your Student!

As a parent or carer, it can sometimes be difficult to know what to do to help a young person when they are going through a particularly stressful time in education.

But we are here to share some helpful tips that might make it that little bit easier!

Throughout their studies, young people are often asked to work towards a deadline or prepare for an exam. And each student will deal with this differently! But for most, it can be an overwhelming and pressurised time. So as their parent/carer, of course you want to support them, but it’s not always easy to know how.

One of the best ways that you can provide guidance for a student, is to do a little bit of research yourself. For example, if your young person is currently facing their future choices in their transition from school to further education, it might be useful to see what the application process looks like and what courses are available to them. Then when it comes to helping them with the process, you’ll have a better idea about what to expect! If they are transitioning to Higher Education, we have some great information on our website at https://www.nerap.ac.uk/parents-carers/ covering everything from student finance to UCAS applications!

When dealing with exam or assignment stress, you can also use this approach. Finding out more information about their study schedule, and any upcoming deadlines can better your understanding of their current needs. If a student is struggling to balance their workload, spending time with them to organise a study timetable might be useful. Once you have opened this conversation, you can ask them if you are able to support them in any other way. Many students find working with others to be helpful, whether that be quizzing them or just checking in on their progress! Again, all students are different and it’s just about finding out what works best for you and your young person.

We understand that sometimes communication can be difficult, but there are lots of websites out there created exclusively for parents and carers to better understand the support you can offer! Keep up-to-date with websites like studentminds.org.uk and UCAS to get current information and guidance. And, we are always here to support you in any way that we can.
