Hello! My name is Keely, I am a second-year student at Newcastle University, and I study English Literature with Creative Writing. As part of the NERAP team, I will be using this platform to share with you my personal tips, tricks, guidance and advice on all thing’s student related.

Introduction

First thing’s first, I thought the best way for you to learn about what student life is like, is by describing my own life as a student!  Obviously, this can vary, but as a brief overview, this is what my life as a second-year student at Newcastle University looks like on a day-to-day basis.

Student Day in The Life

Morning:

I usually wake up at around 8:00am every morning, as this gives me time to properly wake up for the day. Stretching and meditating has become a staple in my routine, even if it’s just for ten minutes, as this ensures that I’m not grumpy for the rest of the morning. (I’m not a morning person naturally, but this has come with time!)

Breakfast is also crucial for fuel. I usually keep it simple (partly because I’m lazy) and grab a banana or an apple – and this is fine! The most important thing is that I get in my nutrition to start off the day.

Afternoon:

In between my lectures and seminars, I usually see my friends; we might go and grab a coffee, or sit in a study area, or even go back home for a couple of hours – it really depends on the day. Afterwards, if I have work to catch up on, I’ll go the library (A.K.A my second home) and complete any work that needs doing.

Then comes the best part of the day – lunch time! My lunch typically varies from meal prep to a Co-op meal deal, to a Gregg’s vegan sausage roll. One of the great things about student life, is that there are a wide range of cafés, restaurants and food chains in close vicinity to campus.

Evening:

In the evenings I like to wind down with my housemates whilst we cook ourselves dinner. It’s important to have time to relax in the day. Then, if I’m feeling productive, I’ll go to the gym, or on Thursday’s I’ll play netball for the Newcastle Medics Netball Team. I decided to join the team in second year, and it’s the best decision I have made so far this year!

Once I’m home, depending on the day I’ll either unwind and watch something, or do some reading, or maybe get ready to go to the pub with my friends. The great thing about university, is that no day is the same; whether you’re wanting a laid-back evening, or to socialise and have some fun, the options are endless.
