Our annual University Explained conference for Parents/Carers will take place on Saturday 4th November 2017, 9.30am – 2.15pm at Durham University.

University Explained is a joint event between the five North East Universities and can help you support your young person in the decisions they will have to make regarding university.

The programme will offer a range of informal sessions that address common questions, such as:

  • Which course and university?
  • What happens during the application process?
  • What financial and transitional support is offered for students?
  • What are the career options?

The event is aimed at parents/carers of pupils who are currently studying in Year 10, 11 or 12/first-year college, but open to any parent/carer who is interested in finding out more.

We have a detailed set of workshops available, outlining different areas involved in applying to Higher Education including:

A) Support At University

Learn more about the huge range of support and advice available to students. Covering a range of topics such as disability support, financial support and campus security.

B) Supported Entry Routes

All five universities have Supported Entry Routes to encourage students with the potential to succeed at university, but who, for a variety of reasons, may not be likely to progress to Higher Education. This session provides a definition of an Access Scheme and details the characteristics and eligibility criteria of those offered at the five Universities.

C) Student Accommodation

Find out more about the different types of student accommodation available at university, including accommodation security and the payment process. Current students will be on hand throughout the day to talk about their experiences of university accommodation.

D) Student Opportunities & Employability

Explore the huge range of extracurricular activities and opportunities available to students whilst they are studying. This session will look at how students can make the most of these opportunities to improve their employability upon graduation.

There will also be the chance to hear directly from the Student Loans Company. This session will explain how the student finance package works by providing relevant information on different types of funding, as well as, the repayment system.
