A young carer is someone under 18 who helps look after someone in their family, or a friend, who is ill, disabled or misuses drugs or alcohol. Research has identified that as many as 2 pupils in every class could be a young carer.
As a Partnership we have committed to working within the region to identify and support Young Carers. Working in partnership with local authorities, we have developed a full programme of activities for young people in Year 10 and 11.
YouNE Cares is an opportunity for young people who have caring responsibilities to come together and find out what it’s like to be a student at a university in the North East. In 2015-16 academic year, we delivered a pilot activity whereby over the 3 event programme, we provided a range of activities at each of the Partner universities. This enabled every young person a chance to find out more about their potential future careers, whilst making new friends, build their confidence and most importantly – have fun! The Partnership offers this opportunity to all Young Carers in the region and does not specify entry requirements – we welcome students from all backgrounds.
